IPHAS (INT Photometric Hα Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane) maps the northern Galactic Plane in Hα, r′ and i′ filters using the Wide Field Camera on the 2.5-m Isaac Newton Telescope at La Palma, covering |b| < 5° to a depth of r′ = 20 (10σ). CASU provided data processing for the survey and its Initial Data Release covering September 2003 to December 2005.

The INT Photometric Hα Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (IPHAS; Drew et al. 2005) maps the northern Galactic Plane in the latitude range |b| < 5° in the Hα, r′ and i′ bands using the Wide Field Camera on the 2.5-m Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) at La Palma. The survey reaches a depth of r′ = 20 (10σ).
The Initial Data Release (IDR; Gonzalez-Solares et al. 2008) is the first major public data release, providing images and catalogues from data obtained between September 2003 and December 2005 over a total of 212 nights. Approximately 60% of the total survey area was covered to final survey quality in that period.
Scientific Goals
IPHAS was designed to enable systematic studies of emission-line objects across the northern Galactic Plane, including:
- Hα-emitting stellar objects — Be stars, T Tauri stars, Herbig Ae/Be stars
- Planetary nebulae and their progenitors
- Symbiotic stars, cataclysmic variables and novae
- Stellar populations along the Galactic Plane, including photometric distances
