CamCEAD Cambridge leads UK involvement in GaiaNIR, ESA's Voyage 2050 candidate mission and near-infrared successor to Gaia.
The CamCEAD team in Cambridge is leading UK involvement in GaiaNIR, a candidate for an ESA Voyage Large mission. GaiaNIR would launch in the 2040s as the successor to Gaia. Its new near-infrared detectors would let it observe stars towards the centre of our Galaxy, which are exactly the stars Gaia cannot see because of dust.
CamCEAD is currently leading an ESA-funded detector study that is testing low readout noise devices for use in GaiaNIR.
