About Gaia
Gaia is an ESA space observatory that has spent over a decade measuring the positions, distances, motions, brightnesses and colours of approximately one billion stars and other objects across the Milky Way and beyond — creating the most precise three-dimensional map of our Galaxy ever made. Launched in December 2013, Gaia completed 3,827 days of science operations before being passivated. Data processing and analysis by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC) continues, with the mission's first principal data release — DR4 — planned for 2 December 2026.

CamCEAD designs, maintains, and runs high-throughput architectures responsible for processing billions of stellar observations within the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC). Our primary involvement is with CU5 (Photometric Processing) and DPCI — the largest single-group contribution to Gaia photometric data from Cambridge.
The DPCI End-to-End Photometric Data Flow
CamCEAD holds primary responsibility for the PhotPipe calibration pipeline and DPCI processing nodes — covering photometric calibration, science alerts, and community data products across all Gaia data releases.
DPCI Pipeline Operations
Managing systems critical to mapping the Milky Way's luminosity profiles, colour scales, and fine-grained transient events:
- Maintenance and Operations: Overseeing various data processing pipelines deployed within Cambridge's computational fabric.
- PhotPipe Orchestration: Delivering synchronised internal and external calibrations across thousands of specialised astronomical frameworks.
- Additional Pipelines: Running parallel data reduction stacks developed by CU5/DPCI, including ScienceAlerts for instantaneous transient detection, SEAPipe, and SIF Photometry.
Community Tools: GaiaXPy
An open-source Python library designed as a direct community-facing product by the CU5/DPCI team:
- Spectra Calibration: Enables users to process, calibrate, and transform raw Gaia BP/RP sampled spectra into scientifically usable form.
- Synthetic Photometry: Generates conventional, standardised photometric system magnitudes and profiles directly from absolute spectra.
- Open Source: Available on PyPI and GitHub for the global astronomical community.
CU9 Contribution
CamCEAD's involvement within Coordination Unit 9 ensures that processing knowledge is systematically translated for end users:
- Release Documentation: Authoring, compiling, and validating the descriptive and programmatic documentation attached to public catalogue iterations.
- User Readiness: Structuring technical notes to support global community onboarding during data release cycles.
The IRIS Ecosystem at CamCEAD
CamCEAD relies on the IRIS National Facility to fulfil intensive distributed cloud processing and large-scale pipeline computing allocations required by the Gaia data volumes.
Kubernetes Clusters
Providing distributed, resilient dynamic orchestration for high-performance astronomical data tasks across containerised layers, enabling elastic scaling with Gaia data release volumes.
Spark / pySpark Engines
Utilising Apache Spark and pySpark as the primary analytical framework to drive massive, distributed memory data reduction and parallel queries across billions of Gaia observations.
