CamCEAD (formerly the Cambridge Astronomical Survey Unit, CASU) leads the core 4MOST Data Management System (DMS) and hosts the 4MOST Data Processing Centre (4DPC) at Cambridge, performing all Level 1 processing, integrating galactic and extragalactic Level 2 pipelines, and ensuring Phase 3 delivery of science-ready products to the ESO archive.

What is 4MOST?
The 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST) is a high-multiplex, fibre-fed spectroscopic survey facility mounted on ESO's VISTA 4-m telescope at Paranal Observatory in Chile. It simultaneously obtains spectra of up to 2,400 objects across a 4.2-square-degree field — making it one of the most powerful spectroscopic survey machines in the southern hemisphere. The initial five-year public survey programme encompasses 10 consortium and 15 ESO community programmes, targeting at least 25 million objects over 15,000 square degrees of sky.
4MOST is designed to complement ESO's own Gaia, Euclid and PLATO missions as well as the ground-based Vera C. Rubin Observatory, providing the spectroscopic follow-up capability needed to turn photometric and astrometric surveys into science.
Cambridge as the 4MOST Data Processing Centre (4DPC)
CamCEAD leads the core 4MOST Data Management System (DMS) and is the designated 4MOST Data Processing Centre (4DPC). Cambridge is responsible for the end-to-end production data flow: from receipt of raw observations through all Level 1 reduction, integration of Level 2 science pipelines, and final Phase 3 delivery of validated, science-ready products to the ESO Science Archive.
L1 Processing
Level 1 — Core data reduction
All Level 1 processing for 4MOST is performed at Cambridge under CamCEAD's leadership of the DMS team. This encompasses the full nightly data reduction chain:
- Bias, flat-field and wavelength calibration
- Sky subtraction and flux calibration
- Extraction of individual fibre spectra across all modes (LRS, HRS)
- Quality control and nightly validation
- Calibration product generation and management
L2 Integration
Level 2 — Science pipeline integration
Cambridge integrates the higher-level science products delivered by the consortium's galactic and extragalactic pipelines, creating coherent, homogeneous science-ready datasets:
- Ingestion of galactic pipeline products (stellar parameters, kinematics, abundances)
- Ingestion of extragalactic pipeline products (redshifts, classifications, line measurements)
- Cross-survey consistency checks and provenance tracking
- Catalogue assembly and validation
Phase 3
Phase 3 — ESO archive delivery
CamCEAD ensures that all 4MOST data products meet ESO Phase 3 requirements for science-ready products delivered to the ESO Science Archive Facility (SAF):
- ESO Phase 3 format compliance and metadata curation
- Submission of reduced spectra, catalogues and value-added products
- Enabling public community access through the ESO archive
- Survey data release coordination across all survey programmes
The DMS operational ecosystem
The 4MOST Data Management System orchestrates the full operational lifecycle from observation planning at Paranal through to archive delivery. Cambridge leads the DMS team, directed by Nic Walton and David Murphy, and is responsible for end-to-end system functionality.
Observation Planning
Survey execution & scheduling
The DMS supports the automated generation and scheduling of Observing Blocks (OBs), integrating target catalogues from all survey programmes and optimising observations based on live site conditions. The system demonstrated autonomous nightly operations during Operations Rehearsal 4 (OpR4).
Provenance & Tracking
State management & provenance
The DMS maintains full provenance and processing state across all data products, tracking each observation from raw frame through to archived science product. Validation gates at each stage enforce data-model compliance before products advance in the pipeline.
